SRINAGAR: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar on Ayaan Sajad, a 12-year-old singing prodigy from Kashmir, for his outstanding contribution to the Art and Culture category. The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 26, celebrated the achievements of exceptional children across the nation.
Ayaan, a resident of the Anantnag district in South Kashmir, rose to prominence with his soulful rendition of the Kashmiri song BeDard Dadi Chane, which became an Internet sensation. Originally penned by 17th-century Kashmiri Sufi poet Shamas Fakeer, the song bridges traditional Kashmiri music with modern influences. Ayaan’s unique voice and innovative style have resonated with audiences, earning him millions of views online and cementing his place as a cultural icon in the Valley.
The young artist’s journey began modestly with performances at family gatherings and local events. A defining moment came when RJ Umer, a well-known local radio jockey, recognised his talent and gave him a platform to perform. Together, they produced BeDard Dadi Chane under Mashq Talks – Music, blending Sufi melodies with pop and rap elements.
During his repeated interviews after his take off as the youngest music sensation, Ayaan expressed his desire to represent Kashmir globally and inspire younger generations to embrace their cultural roots. He also dreams of entering Bollywood to showcase Kashmiri music on a larger stage while maintaining a focus on his studies and future aspirations, which include preparing for the UPSC examinations.
Ayaan’s talent and efforts to revitalise Kashmiri music have drawn widespread admiration, especially as younger audiences reconnect with their cultural heritage through his work. His repertoire includes popular tracks like Jaana Janai and Go Kiya Malal Yaaras, alongside devotional naats. Despite limited formal training, Ayaan’s dedication and natural talent have made him a prominent voice in Kashmiri music.

As he continues his musical journey, Ayaan hopes to preserve and promote the rich cultural traditions of Kashmir, inspiring others to cherish their heritage and language. His recognition at the national level is a testament to the transformative power of art and its ability to connect people across generations and regions.
