SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir continued to receive widespread rainfall, with Katra recording the highest cumulative precipitation of 245.6 mm between July 19 and 21, as heavy downpours triggered flash floods, landslides and a sharp rise in water levels across several districts.
According to rainfall data, Poonch recorded 204.5 mm during the three-day period, followed by Rajouri (186.2 mm), Reasi (184.5 mm) and Udhampur (155.2 mm).
Rainfall recorded during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday showed significant precipitation across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions. In the Kashmir region, Awantipora received 33 mm, Gulmarg 29.4 mm, Srinagar Airport 27.5 mm, Pampore 25.5 mm, Ganderbal 21.5 mm, Sangam 16 mm, Sonamarg 15.5 mm and Baramulla 15 mm. Srinagar city recorded 9.1 mm of rainfall.
In the Jammu region, Katra received 107.1 mm during the 24-hour period, followed by Poonch (61.5 mm), Reasi (54.5 mm), Rajouri (49 mm), Jammu (35 mm), Samba (34 mm) and Udhampur (28.2 mm)
The persistent rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides and caused a significant rise in the water levels of rivers and nallahs, particularly in Rajouri and Poonch districts. The adverse weather has resulted in loss of life and damage to public and private property, prompting authorities to deploy rescue teams and issue public safety advisories.
The Meteorological Department has forecast that wet weather will continue over parts of Jammu and Kashmir and has urged people, particularly those living in hilly and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
