Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has expressed his shock over alleged rape incident and demanded exemplary punishment for those VDC members involved in sexual assault of a 15 year old girl.

“Muslim Community in Jammu region in addition to atrocities perpetrated by forces and VDC members faces more enormous and tough situation and it has been proved by recent rape incident of a minor girl,” Geelani said in a statement.

He has alleged that men in uniform were encouraged as the forces personnel involved in Kunan Poshpora and Shopian tragedy (Asyia and Nilofer) were not prosecuted for their offences against women and “the result the incidents like Kunan Posha Pora series continue to happen unabated.”

“As they are not asked for their misdeeds they commit such heinous crimes as they have privilege of impunity under the garb of AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act. Nobody would inquire about or punish them,” he claimed.

While referring to the recent desecration of Holy Quran and Gool tragedy and the blame game between Police and BSF personnel a ploy, Geelani has said that it was aimed at to create controversy and distort evidences. “The main aim is to provide benefit of doubt to culprits. How can you expect justice in sexual assault of a minor girl, when evidences in Gool like incidents are being concealed and tampered,” he asked.

Demanding immediate disarmament and dissolution of VDCs, Hurriyat (G) chairman has said that the aim of these committees is nothing other than to suppress Muslim community in Jammu and put them to the mercy of communal elements. Taking a dig at VDCs Geelani claimed that they have made lives of Muslims pitiable and they act like dacoits of Chambal Ghati.
