A teenage girl from Kupwara was critically injured in a stone-pelting incident in northern part of Kashmir’s Sopore at Seelu village in Baramulla district last Friday.

Rifat Gulzar, 17-year-old from Poshpora Trehgam in Kupwara district has undergone a “major surgery” as she was hit by a stone in her head. She is admitted at SKIMS Soura.

On Friday afternoon, Rifat was travelling from Srinagar to Kupwara with her father in a bus. “Upon reaching Seelu village our bus was stopped by a group of youth who had blocked the highway,” her father, Gulzar Ahmad Bhat said.

“Upon being confronted by a group of youth, the bus driver refused to move on. Thus, all of us came down from the bus,” he said.

“Amid snowfall, when we were waiting for a lift, a police vehicle arrived and youth started pelting stones on it,” Gulzar said, “Suddenly, a stone hit my daughter and she collapsed. No one came forward to help.”

It was only after we reached home, three hours later, Rifat was given a first-aid, recalls her father, “She had by then bled profusely.”

Later, Rifat was taken to local hospital where from she was rushed to SMHS in Srinagar. “She has undergone a major head surgery.”

Meanwhile, police has registered an FIR regarded in the incident. “We have registered a case in the incident and have identified the culprits as well,” Harmeet Singh Mehta SP Sopore told Kashmir Life.

On Friday, Sopore town was witnessing a complete shutdown against the killing of slain Al-Badr militant Muzaffar Naikoo.
