Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was informed on Monday that labour laws were being grossly violated in border areas.

The issue was raked up by Congress’ Nubra Lawmaker, Delden Namgial, who informed the Lower House that the local porters who work in these areas were denied basic facilities by the employment giving party.

“Ten army men killed in last February in snow avalanche in Siachen and everyone wailed over it,” Delden told the house, “but what about the porters who lost their lives since 1984 in the highest battle field?”

Alleging that porters are being ignored, Delden said, “the rewards which are due to them too were not given.”

Notably, LoC and borders areas in J&K are majorly manned by army and porters are engaged by them for various jobs.

He appealed Ministry of Labour to look in to matter. “Please monitor the implementation of labour laws in border areas strictly,” he asked Dr Haseeb A Drabu, who is besides FinMin, Labour Minister as well.

Delden demanded that compensation to labourers be given under Works Man Act 1924.
