The students putting up at the hostels of Kashmir University Saturday expressed discontent with the facilities furnished at the campus while demanding a winter break should the varsity continue with the apathy.

The students decried the glaring absence of facilities, including dysfunctional geysers, heaters and other facilities.

“There are 20 rooms in first floor with up to 80 students having only one geyser for use and a solar heater which are not functioning,’’ said a law student. “If the university is not able to provide us these facilities then university authorities should announce winter vacations.”

University of Kashmir has two boys’ hostels, two girls’ hostels (one more is ready), one scholars’ hostel and a hostel for foreign students.

Not many students have boarding facilities inside the campus because of the space crunch. A large number of students are living as tenants around peripheries.

However, those using the varsity facility complain about poor boarding facility. “Come to our hostel someday and look for yourself what is the situation of our dining halls,” the students said. “One cannot eat the food which is served to us.”

Students grieved that when they wake up in the morning, they are compelled to take bath with cold water. “There is nobody to clean the garbage littered around either,” a student, wishing anonymity said.

The students pay an annual rent to the varsity authorities, however, day-to-day mess charges are paid monthly.

Meanwhile, KU PRO vowed that he would look into the matter. “Besides, we have already announced the winter break,” he said. “It is just a matter of a few days.”
