SRINAGAR: With preparations underway for the 5th General Autonomous Hill Development Council elections in Kargil, Rahul Gandhi and Omar Abdullah are set to address a large gathering in the district on August 25, according to party sources.

Election authorities in the region have already released the election schedule for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, which will witness a direct contest between the National Conference-Congress alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Top party sources informed the news agency KNO that both Rahul Gandhi and Omar Abdullah plan to address a major election-related gathering in Kargil district next Friday (25th August).

Both the National Conference and the Indian National Congress (INC) have announced their pre and post-poll alliance.

A party source mentioned that candidates for 15 seats have been announced jointly by INC and NC. “We have allocated candidates according to constituencies, and in some places, both NC and INC are contesting together. We have agreed to a 50-50 split in the post-poll alliance,” the party source said.

He further mentioned that Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Kargil on the evening of August 24. “Initially, on the same evening, he will host a youth interaction program.”

The party source added that Rahul Gandhi is slated to address a large public rally in Kargil the following day. “He is scheduled to address the public rally on August 25. Omar Abdullah is also expected to join the public rally upon invitation. They will jointly address the people of Kargil,” the party source said while requesting anonymity.

Meanwhile, INC Spokesperson Nasir Munshi told KNO that Rahul Gandhi’s presence is expected to bolster support for the alliance in the district.

He also mentioned that they have collaborated with NC on a seat-to-seat basis. “We have disclosed everything decided jointly in the alliance. Only NC and INC have a strong political foothold in the district. We aim to secure an absolute majority.” (KNO)
