Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) chief and MLA Langate Er Rasheed Saturday visited Kotbalwal Jail in Jammu and met many detainees and inquired about the difficulties being faced by them in the jail.

An AIP statement issued this evening said that Rasheed raised the issues faced by detainees with jail authorities.

“These prisoners face many basic problems including that of electricity and water. Despite making periodic requests to the jail authorities to find a solution of their problems, administration has preferred to ignorance,” Rasheed alleged in the statement.

“The J&K Government has not even installed a couple of bore wells in the premises and continuous unscheduled power cuts have made life of detainees miserable,” he said.

Later, Rasheed had a detailed meeting with the jail authorities and urged upon them to uphold the human rights of detainees who are not criminals but political prisoners.

He stressed the need to ensure that detainees are produced before the courts on due dates of the hearing so that they get justice as early as possible, the statement added.
