SRINAGAR : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called for developing a responsible and inclusive tourism model in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the real success of the sector lies not in record tourist arrivals alone but in ensuring prosperity reaches every household.
Addressing the Ethical Tourism Conclave organised by the Tourist Trade Interest Guild in Srinagar, Sinha said tourism in J&K should be treated as a responsibility towards nature, culture and society, urging all stakeholders to adopt ethical and sustainable practices.
He said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed record tourist arrivals, rising investments and improved employment opportunities over the past six years, but stressed that these achievements must translate into better livelihoods for local communities.
The Lieutenant Governor said boatmen on Dal Lake, pony owners, artisans associated with traditional crafts such as pashmina and papier-mâché, homestay operators and local youth should all become equal beneficiaries of tourism growth. He added that profits should not remain confined to large businesses alone.
Highlighting environmental concerns, Sinha said infrastructure development must go hand in hand with conservation and advocated eco-friendly tourism practices, including reducing single-use plastics, proper waste management and responsible use of natural resources.
He also proposed certification standards for eco-friendly hotels and homestays, greater use of digital platforms to connect tourists with local communities and training programmes to encourage youth participation in sustainable tourism.
