LG Manoj Sinha Showcases Kashmir’s Craft Legacy at World Craft Council Meeting

   

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, speaking at the 60th World Craft Council (WCC) meeting at SKICC in Srinagar, emphasised his administration’s efforts to connect Jammu and Kashmir’s artisans with the global community, showcasing the region’s rich craft heritage.

Terming Srinagar’s inclusion in the prestigious World Craft City list a “milestone achievement,” Sinha outlined initiatives transforming the city into a hub of opportunity. Highlighting the ongoing infrastructure upgrades and smart solutions under the Smart City project, he remarked, “The last 50 months have been a period of significant progress and transformation, offering a platform for new dreams and possibilities.”

Sinha welcomed global delegates attending the WCC’s 60th-anniversary celebrations, underscoring the event’s role in fostering collaboration among craftsmen, industry experts & policymakers. “This gathering presents a unique opportunity to share knowledge and explore innovative solutions to challenges facing the craft sector,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalising Jammu & Kashmir’s centuries-old crafts. He spotlighted strategic measures to connect local artisans to international markets, preserve cultural legacies like handicrafts and handlooms, and boost exports. “Our goal is not only to preserve these crafts but also to enhance their global recognition,” Sinha added.

Sinha highlighted initiatives supporting artisans & weavers, such as financial aid schemes and training programs aimed at enhancing competitiveness. He noted the region’s leap in the Export Promotion Index ranking from 25th to 17th in 2023-2024, reflecting J&K’s growing prominence in global trade.

The Lieutenant Governor praised the establishment of over 5,000 cooperative societies, which have created a collaborative environment for artisans. He also stressed the importance of Geographical Indication (GI) tagging, which has safeguarded the authenticity of J&K’s iconic crafts.

Sinha celebrated the global acclaim for J&K’s Pashmina wool and Kashmiri carpets, describing them as “among the finest in the world.” He reaffirmed his administration’s vision of preserving the region’s craft legacy while ensuring its continued growth and global prominence in the years ahead.
