The initiative is designed to modernise traditional handloom and craft activities by developing them into organised rural enterprises, thereby generating employment opportunities for women, artisans and young people.
According to officials, the centres are located at Skurbuchan, Wanla, Saspol, Chuchot, Kharu, Anlay, Koyul, Korzok, Chushul, Phobrang, Sato, Panamik, Diskit, Turtuk and Digger.
The facilities will serve as shared workspaces for weavers, spinners, tailors, artisans and women self-help groups, equipped with improved infrastructure to enhance production quality and support local manufacturing.
Authorities said the centres are expected to boost handloom-based economic activity, promote skill development and encourage micro-enterprises within rural communities.
They added that the initiative is not limited to production facilities but is intended to function as wider hubs of community participation and rural development.
The administration hopes the centres will generate self-employment, reduce migration from villages, and strengthen local economies by enabling residents to build livelihoods within their own areas.
Officials further said the centres will also support the preservation of Ladakh’s traditional craft heritage while helping local products reach broader national and international markets.
The project forms part of wider efforts to promote decentralised economic growth and strengthen village-level production systems across the Union Territory.
