SRINAGAR: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) has imposed penalties amounting to Rs 3.15 lakh on firms across Jammu and Kashmir for violating packaging, labelling and e-commerce consumer information norms.
According to officials, enforcement teams in Jammu detected major lapses in the labelling of tiles manufactured and sold in the division. The products lacked mandatory declarations, including MRP, net quantity, PKD, unit sale price, and complete product details, besides improper font size — a clear breach of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Three firms accepted the notices and paid Rs 1.65 lakh as compounding fees.
In Kashmir, the Consumer Protection Wing Srinagar initiated action against two leading manufacturers after discovering irregular declarations on pre-packaged goods listed on Amazon and other e-commerce platforms. Online checks revealed missing consumer details, incorrect numerals and incomplete disclosures on food and general commodities. Both firms opted for compounding, resulting in an additional Rs 1.50 lakh penalty.
With both divisions combined, the department has realised Rs 3.15 lakh in fines, which officials said underscores its commitment to enforcing transparency and ensuring fair trade practices in both online and offline markets.
LMD stated that regular inspections and enhanced e-commerce monitoring will continue to safeguard consumer rights across the Union Territory.
