In wake of the killing of five Indian army men and injuries to two Pakistan’s soldiers in last two days along the Line of Control, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday said that flare-up has potential to harm improving ties between India and Pakistan.

Addressing a gathering at the Historical Bazaar Masjid at Bohri Kadal Masjid, Mirwaiz stressed upon both countries to demilitarize the borders and ensure the safety of Kashmiris living along the LoC on both sides of the divided Kashmir.

He said that killing of Indian or Pakistani soldiers during border tension has always remained a cause of concern.

“Kashmiris have repeatedly stressed upon both the nation to solve Kashmir to stop the wastage of lives on both sides of LOC,” he said, according to a local news agency, KNS.

Mirwaiz said a conducive atmosphere was needed to solve the Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Till basic issue of Kashmir is not solved, all other steps to stabilize the relations would prove to be a futile exercise,” he said, adding, “Improving trade relations, water, sir creek, and Siachen issues can’t be solved till creation of a favourable atmosphere.”

Mirwaiz said lasting solution of Kashmir issue would create a conducive atmosphere for addressing other problems existing between the two countries.

Stating that Kashmiris are the worst victims of tense relations between the two neighbours, Mirwaiz expressed desire that India and Pakistan would show political prudence and would take appropriate measures to normalize their relations.

Expressing serious concern over the reports that four herb collectors, labeled as militants, were killed by the army along LoC in Machil sector during a “fake encounter”, Mirwaiz demanded an immediate impartial inquiry into the incident.

Mirwaiz also appealed people to observe Eid with modesty as Kashmir including many countries in the Islamic phase were going through a critical phase in history.
