Four Government employees including a Junior Engineer were critically injured after the residents of Amno Kulgam assaulted them with sticks and spades while they were busy in chopping off trees and dismantling illegal temporary sheds along the river bank and canals.

Reports said that Irrigation and Flood Control Department in compliance with court orders started a drive to chopping off trees and illegal structures along the river Veshu and canals to widen their banks. Court in its direction had approved axing of hundreds of trees along the river banks and other canals.

Eyewitnesses said that under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner and I&FC Department officials a team arrived at Amno Village to clear the canal banks from trees and other illegal tin sheds. They that as the ADC and other officials left the place, scores of residents of Amno village armed with sticks and spades attacked the I&FC department employees who were busy in guiding the labour force. “The agitated residents first directed the department official to stop their work and when they refused, they attacked them, leaving four employees including a Junior Engineer critically wounded,” an official from I&FC Department said.

The injured employees were hospitalized while ADC Kulgam Sajad Hussain along with police officials visited the spot to assess the situation. “We have registered a case against the miscreants and legal action will be initiated against them,” said a police official while ADC Kulgam said that they are just following the court orders and anyone who will defy these orders will face the music.

The injured employees have been identified as Muhammad Yousuf Mir of Bomrat, Bashir Ahmed Dar of Chechadpora, Altaf Ahmed of Sangran and Junior Engineer Muhammad Asif Shah. (CNS)
