SRINAGAR: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the death of a youth who became unconscious while being questioned at a Border Police Post in RS Pura area of Jammu, prompting protests by his family and local residents.
The deceased has been identified as Uttam Chand, a resident of Rakh, Chakroi. According to the police, he was called to the Border Police Post (BPP) Chakroi on September 9, 2026, in connection with a complaint.
Police said Chand suddenly became unconscious during the questioning and was taken to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) RS Pura. He was subsequently referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Following news of his death, Chand’s family, relatives and local residents staged a dharna at Chakroi Chowk, alleging wrongdoing and demanding an impartial investigation. The protesters sought the removal of the police post in-charge and other personnel allegedly responsible for the incident.
They also demanded a government job for the deceased’s next of kin and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the bereaved family.
Responding to the protests, SP Headquarters Anna Sinha said a magisterial inquiry had been ordered and assured the family that those found responsible would face action in accordance with law.
“Before completion of the inquiry, we cannot term anyone accused or guilty,” Sinha said, adding that statements of the deceased’s family members and witnesses would be recorded as part of the investigation.
She said action would be taken against anyone found guilty, irrespective of whether the person belonged to the police or the other side.
Sinha, along with senior police officers, met the bereaved family and assured them of justice.
She said a request for a magisterial inquiry had already been sent to the Deputy Commissioner and that departmental action would follow against any police personnel found guilty.
