Omar Smith of Panama’s National Civil Protection Service urged residents to remain calm, telling local media that the reported damage was concentrated in the central provinces of Veraguas, Herrera and Los Santos. He said there had been no reports of damage in Panama City, which is known for its numerous skyscrapers.
The Civil Protection Service said it was assessing potential damage in areas near the earthquake’s epicentre.
Rosendo Domínguez, 60, a resident of Herrera province, told The Associated Press that the shaking had knocked items over in his kitchen. He said he and his family were safe but frightened, adding that people had gone outside because of fear.
Panama is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region characterised by extensive seismic activity where a large proportion of the world’s earthquakes occur.
