SRINAGAR

Nearly two dozen shops were destroyed or seriously damaged in a massive conflagration that has engulfed parts of the Kupwara market, reports reaching here said.

Residents said they are on the job along with dozens of fire tenders but it is yet to be brought under control.

They said the fire emerged from a complex in the Iqbal Market located opposite the district hospital. The building is quite old and the flames controlled it quite fast and then the fire spread to the rest of the market. The complex was housing most of the town’s drug whole-sellers, Photostat shops and the general merchants.

Initial reports said at least twenty shops are destroyed but the civilians say it is as huge as 40 shops. The fight to control the fires is on. Entire police and civilian administration is on the spot.

Reasons for the fires were not immediately known.

Off late, the instances of fires have gone up. Srinagar lost part of the Saraibala market in a fire only two days back.
