SRINAGAR: On Children’s Day, Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) and former Chief Minister, reached out with a message of hope and support for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. She expressed deep concern for the unique struggles they face, shaped by years of conflict and lost opportunities.
Ms Mufti noted that the lives of many young people in the region have been marred by strife and that ongoing recruitment irregularities and skewed reservation policies are compounding these issues, leaving talented youth disillusioned. She criticised current recruitment practices and the reservation system, arguing that they fail to create fair opportunities, ultimately putting the futures of thousands at risk and creating widespread discontent.
Highlighting the urgent need to address these issues, Ms Mufti warned of the potential rise in addiction, violence, and other negative influences among young people if meaningful reforms are not implemented. She called for a transparent recruitment process and a fair reservation policy that recognises merit and benefits those in genuine need.
“Jammu and Kashmir is one of India’s youngest states, and we bear a serious responsibility to empower and uplift our youth,” Ms Mufti stated, emphasising the importance of nurturing young minds and fostering hope in democratic institutions. She reiterated her commitment, along with that of the JKPDP, to restoring trust in the system and building a future in which the youth of Jammu and Kashmir can thrive.
