Amid Massive protests against the killing of a local militant in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, authorities imposed curfew in home district of deceased rebel.

Omais Ahmad sheikh, son of Farooq Sheikh, resident of Chatapora Pulwama was killed in a brief encounter with army in Ajas area of Bandipora late last evening.

Pulwama town is observing a spontaneous shutdown against the death of the local militant. Traffic is off the roads while shops and establishments are cloased.

Omais, police said was Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative.

A college student, reports said that he had joined LeT in June earlier this year.

As the news of his killing spread, hundreds of youths in Pulwama town took to streets and held massive anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. The protests continued for the whole night.

To prevent apparent massive participation of people in the funeral prayers, the authorities imposed curfew in Pulwama in the wee hours today to keep the situation under control.

A heavy contingent of police and paramilitary personnel has been deployed across the town.
