A minor girl and a soldier died while two others received injuries after a tree fell on them in two different areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday evening, an official said.

Tariq Ahmad, Station House Officer (SHO) Chandoosa Baramulla told KNS that a five-year-old Iqra Jan, daughter of Muhammad Ashraf Khan of Faqir Bhag Chandoosa died while her mother and brother identified as Akbar Jahaan and Hilal Ahmad Khan sustained injuries after a tree fell on their Kotha during the windstorm on last evening.

He said that the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment.

Quoting police official, reports said that a soldier identified as Surinder Kumar of 64 field regiment Ziran Tangmarg died after a nearby tree fell on the post he was manning last evening.

Meanwhile at least 22 residential houses were damaged after trees fell on their roofs in Tangdar area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The houses were damaged in Tangdar and Teetwal blocks after almond and Devdar trees fell on their roofs.

“One middle school and two vehicles including, Maruti 800 and Scorpio were also damaged after trees uprooted in Chatkadi area,” locals said.

They said that hailstorm in the area damaged crops, fruits and other things.

Meanwhile, in Nowgam area of Handwara, windstorm caused widespread damage to the residential houses and other properties of people. “One High school got damaged after tree uprooted in the area,” locals said.

Locals said that in Nowgam’s Baghdaji village, their lives are at risk as the trees are about to fall.

They said that few months back, a youth became handicapped after tree fell on him due to the windstorm in the area.
