SRINAGAR: MLA Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi is set to move an amendment to a resolution presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, seeking to record the House’s “deep anguish and disapproval” over measures initiated on and after August 5, 2019.
The amendment proposes adding a specific reference to the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A and the reorganisation of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The proposed text is to be inserted after the words “6th November, 2024” in the resolution.
It states: “While expressing its deep anguish and disapproval over the unilateral measures initiated on and after 5 August 2019, which resulted in the cessation of Article 370 and Article 35A, and the reorganization of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.”
Muntazir said the amendment was aimed at placing the constitutional and political developments following August 5, 2019, explicitly on record in the Assembly proceedings.
He said the changes introduced after that date had altered the constitutional and political framework of Jammu and Kashmir and that the Assembly should articulate its position on them.
The MLA also linked the proposed amendment to the demand for restoration of full statehood and constitutional safeguards for Jammu and Kashmir, saying the two demands should be pursued together.
He said the amendment builds on earlier Assembly resolutions and seeks to ensure that developments since August 5, 2019, are expressly acknowledged in the House’s present position.
