A cabin-desk which contained critical documents about private schools was gutted in mysterious fire that broke out in the Directorate of Education Kashmir here, sources said on Thursday.

The mysterious fire which erupted in the wee hours has raised ‘eyebrows’ as officials believe a ‘mafia’ working for the private schools may have ‘set’ the cabin on fire to hide bungling.

Reliable sources said at around 6 am, a fire erupted in the private section. “The fire erupted from a table where important record of Kashmir private schools including inspection report got gutted,” they said.

Sources in Education Department believe that the fire was not accidental but there seems some ‘conspiracy’. “How come it is that only table would be gutted?” they asked.

Soon after the fire, the education officials, police and fire service personal rushed to the spot and doused the fire from spreading, sources said.

The Director Education Kashmir, Tariq Ali Mir, told GNS that the timely action by them ‘saved the computers and other record in the section’.

On being asked that important record of private schools has gutted, he said: “Though it is not the case, but we also keep photo copies of the record and other papers.”

The Director further said he can’t say whether someone is behind the incident or it is just an accident. “Presently I can’t say anything. But, I have constituted a committee and asked the committee to submit its report within a week.

He also said that police will investigate the incident. “We have also registered a case and whosoever is found guilty, would be punished.”

A section of officials, however, maintain that the cabin had been ‘set’ on fire.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case under FIR number 66/2014 under section 435 RPC in this regard and further investigations taken up.
