In a significant development towards revocation of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), State Congress Prof  Saifudin Soz said that ‘revocation of AFSPA’ issue would be discussed in the coalition coordination committee (CC) meeting to be held shortly. He said an effort would be made towards revocation of AFSPA.

He said that he had also written a letter to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde urging him to hold a meeting with CM Omar Abdullah in this regard. “Omar Abdullah is the head of Unified Command and I have written to Shinde Sahab to hold a meeting with State Chief Minister to discuss the proper timing to revoke AFSPA”, Soz told KNS.

This is for the first time Congress has cleared its stand on AFSPA by favoring its revocation. To hold the CC meet to discuss the revocation of AFSPA is also considered a good gesture as the both ruling partners in coalition would press the centre for the move jointly, sources told KNS.

Earlier, State Congress chief had been maintaining that there should be “no unilateral decision” on the AFSPA revocation and all stakeholders should be brought on the table.
