SRINAGAR: In a surprising move, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to remove some chapters from the newly released textbooks for Class 10 students. The dropped chapters include the Periodic Classification of Elements, Democracy and Diversity, Challenges to Democracy, along with a page on Political Parties. Additionally, the chapter on environmental sustainability and sources of energy has also been excluded.

NCERT stated that it was intended to alleviate the burden on students, particularly considering the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises reducing content load and encouraging experiential learning, served as a backdrop for this move. The NCERT further added that they considered the already developed Learning Outcomes while rationalizing the textbooks.

“The content of the textbooks has been rationalised to avoid overlap with similar topics covered in other subjects within the same class. We also took into account the difficulty level, relevance in the present context, and accessibility for self-learning or peer-learning,” explained the NCERT on its website.

As the news spreads, debates continue regarding the potential implications of these exclusions. Students eagerly await further updates and guidance from their teachers to navigate this unexpected change in their curriculum.
