SRINAGAR: The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 626, authorities said, as rescue and relief operations continued for a fourth day across the affected areas.

The latest toll follows an earlier figure of 616 deaths reported by Nepal Police, with nearly 2,500 people still missing.
In an update on the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods, Nepal Police said 616 bodies had been recovered and 17 police personnel remained out of contact.
A total of 8,791 police personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operations, while 3,301 people have been injured and rescued, police said. Of those injured, 140 were treated and discharged from hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley.
A Nepal Police official, quoted by local media, said photographs of unidentified bodies recovered from the flood-hit areas were being displayed to help families establish the identities of missing relatives.
The official said identified bodies would be handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations, while unidentifiled bodies would be preserved to facilitate further identification.
Meanwhile, China has warned Nepal that a temporary lake formed in the upper reaches of the Lhende river system could breach its banks at any time, adding to concerns as rescue operations continue along the Nepal-Tibet border.
According to India Today, Chinese authorities informed Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the colour of the newly formed lake had been steadily darkening, a development that could indicate an increased risk of a breach.
