The state government is likely to sign a MoU with Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) as a consultant for preparation of a comprehensive Disaster Management Plan for Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the recent earthquakes in the Chenab Valley. This was stated at a high level meet chaired by Chief Secretary, Mohammed Iqbal Khanday, to take stock of the measures under implementation to face exigencies on account of natural calamities.

SEIZED

The Srinagar health officer along with her team of food safety officers has lifted and seized the stock of mineral water of the brand name ‘Mount Aqua’ from various suppliers and distributors within the Municipal limits. The health officer’s statement reads: “On inspecting, a large quantity of dust particles and particulate matter was found visible to the naked eye in the packaged tank.”

The Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accorded the sanction to enhance an installment of Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees, state pensioners, family pensioners from 72 % to 80% from January 01, 2013. As per the state, the arrears from January 2013 to April 2013 will be paid in cash to the employees in the month of May 2013.

The upper reaches of Bhaderwah received fresh snowfall in the mountainous belt of Kailash mountains range and Ashapati glacier surrounding Bhaderwah. The weather worsened the situation as the population is still living under the shock of the massive earthquake in the area. Besides, rain lashed the mountainous belt of Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtawar and plains of Jammu division.

Pampore police have arrested Abdul Ahad Jan, son of Dilawar Jan, resident of Rather Mohalla Ajas, Bandipora for extorting Rs 38,000 from Kulvinder Singh, a truck driver, resident of Kahalma, Punjab near Chandhara on the Srinagar Jammu Highway. A case FIR No.56/2013 under section 392, 419 RPC has been registered at Pampore police station in this regard.

INAUGRATED

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Minister of Tourism, inaugurated a dockyard at Abikarpora, Dal Gate. The dockyard worth Rs 3.23 crores will facilitate the houseboat owners for construction and repairs of their house boats. The step was taken as houseboats have a great role to promote tourism in the state, an official said. Besides, the government has launched an incentive scheme under which those, who intend to setup their units under tourism sector, would be provided incentives up to Rs 1 crore.

Iflah Qureshi, a 12th grader has been appointed as an editor of an international children’s newspaper, ‘The Peace Gong’. She has become the first girl to attain the rank as the editor of a global newspaper. The newspaper was released in Delhi on May 10, 2013, by Zalmia Wafamal on the celebrations of Global Youth Service day.

CRASHED

An Army helicopter, Dhruv, crashed in Siachen glacier of J&K while it was on a routine sortie, officials said, adding that the two people on board, pilot and co-pilot, ejected safely. The helicopter was carrying food and other supplies from the Siachen base camp to the forward posts when it crashed. The cause of the crash is yet to be ascertained and an inquiry will be conducted.

MOVED

Habla Begum, 70, from Kupwara has moved an application in the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) seeking enquiry in the disappearance of her son, Zahoor Ahmed Wani, 22, in 1991. The lady has alleged that despite pleading before the police for registration of an FIR regarding the matter but police showed cold response. The petition has prayed that the Commission may take cognizance of the matter and inquiry in the said disappeared person may be conducted and the victim’s mother be compensated.

DROWNED

Bandipora police recovered the body of Krishan Ananad Tawari, head constable of 113 Bn. BSF from river Kishan Ganga near Wangpora Brigde, Gurez. Police said that the deceased drowned in the river due to flood on August 21, 2012 at Barroie, Tulial. The body has been referred to District Hospital, Bandipora for medico-legal formalities. Police has initiated proceedings under section 174 CrPC.
