RELEASED

Nayeem Khan, a senior Hurriyat leader was released after over a period of three months. Khan was arrested on February 8 in connection with an old case of 2000 and he was detained in Central Jail, Srinagar for some time. He was later shifted to Kot Bhalwal jail, Jammu under PSA. His PSA was quashed two days prior to his release.

DIRECTED

State High Court has directed Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to furnish details of the wards and their officers where the Master Plan violations have taken place in Srinagar city and also sought action taken report against the violators. About 1800 major violations of major plan have been reported so far. Major violations have taken place along Srinagar Bypass with residential houses converted into shopping malls and showrooms with active connivance of top officials, reports say.

HELD

Police have arrested Imran Hussain, a drug peddler, and recovered 575 intoxicating capsules from his possession. The police report says that on specific information, a police party from Basohli laid a trap and intercepted Hussain alias Sanju. A case under FIR no. 28/13 has been registered and investigations have started.

ORGANIZED

J&K circle of the postal department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have jointly organised a five-day “Srinagar Post Fest” in an effort to create awareness and involve local residents to keep the city clean. The festival was inaugurated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in presence of Kruparani Killi at GPO, Srinagar. The festival will also host a philately exhibition of stamps from different parts of the country.

SOUGHT

Principal Secretary from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has taken a review of the projects being executed under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Program (PMRP) in J&K, seeking a step-up in funding to undertake new projects. The state government has sought more financial assistance to take up new projects under the program.

APPOINTED

Zaffar Manhas has been appointed as People’s Democratic Party’s state secretary. The appointment has been done by the President on the recommendation of Mohammed Dilawar Mir, Party General Secretary. Manhas is a noted writer, journalist and activist. He joined the party a few months back.

ARRESTED

Police have arrested two brothers – Mohammed Majid and Mohammed Shafiq, in connection with a case of chopping off of ears of Nazir Hussain, a BSF Jawan, few days back which led to his death. Hussain, a resident of Golad, Poonch, was on leave. The crime was done by the accused due to personal enmity. A case FIR No 62/2013 in this regard had already been registered. Both the accused have been booked under Sections 307,323, 34 RPC.

AWARDED

Vinod Kumar, a resident of Jammu has been awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 has been imposed on him. He was found guilty of killing his wife, Anju Sharma, after making her consume some poisonous substance. Police have registered a case under section 174 CrPC as they believed it was a case of unnatural death of a young bride who was killed under suspicious circumstances within one year of her marriage.

EXPLODED

Scores of land mines exploded in a forest in the forward area of Balakote, Mendhar triggering massive fire which spread over three square kilometres from Panjan nallah to Dabbi. Many explosions of land mines were heard after the fire broke, though no loss of human life has been reported so far.

BERSERK

Vijay Singh, a head constable of Shastra Seema Bal (SSB), went berserk in his unit at District Police Lines (DPL), Kishtwar and opened indiscriminate fire from his rifle, killing two of his colleagues and injuring two others before being captured and beaten up by other jawans. Police have arrested the accused and have seized his weapon as well.

CRUSHED

Vinod Kumar, a traffic police constable, was crushed to death by a speedy truck near Vijaypur, Samba. The profusely bleeding constable was shifted to Vijaypur hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The truck driver identified as Bodh Raj, resident of Kathua, has been arrested and a case has been registered at Vijaypur police station. Further investigation into the case is going on.

INAUGRATED

Taj Mohi-ud din, Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, has inaugurated Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) at GB Panth Hospital. The centre has been established under National Rural Health Mission (NHRM). The centre was inaugurated keeping in view the importance of nutritional needs of new born babies, the Minister said while addressing a gathering of doctors and paramedics.
