HELD: Police have launched a crackdown on stone pelters and arrested around 300 youth from Srinagar city and north Kashmir.Protests against the arrests erupted in several old city areas with women taking to the streets demanding their release. Arrests are said to have been made on the basis of lists prepared by the authorities of alleged stone pelters.
APPROVED: The Planning Commission has approved the size of current year’s annual plan for J&K at Rs 6000 crore, a nine percent (Rs 500 crore) increase from previous year’s allocation.The Centre will provide an additional special plan assistance of Rs. 4606 crore to the state. Besides, the state will receive Rs 1200 crore under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan.The state had booked expenditure of 96 percent (Rs. 5281 crores) in the previous annual plan.
CORDONED: Delhi Police cordoned off the India Gate area for an hour and detained three Kashmiri men when its eavesdropping sleuths heard them saying over phone that “they will blow themselves up”. After several hours of sustained questioning the trio were let go. It turned out that the three had gone to meet and impress Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, so that one of them got an election ticket in next elections. They had called their local contact in Jamia Masjid area and told him that if they didn’t get a hearing from the Congress leader, they would “set themselves on fire”. The three men were identified as Nisar Ahmed (60), Bakar Ali (43) and Ghulam Nabi (29), who had unsuccessfully contested elections as Independent candidate.
ARRESTED: State vigilance sleuths arrested Assistant Commissioner Development, Kupwara, Abdul Rashid Bhat for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a contractor.
DEFICIT: A 47 billion rupees (Pakistani) deficit budget was presented in the Pakistan administered Kashmir Assembly. The budget proposals comprise Rs36 billion for non-development and Rs11 billion for development expenses.
VISITED: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq visited ailing rival Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani at SKIMS hospital and enquired about his health.Geelani was admitted in the institute after he complained of chest pain after being set free on court orders from Srinagar central jail.
NOMINATED: India nominated a judge of the Geneva-based International Court of Justice Peter Tomka and a Swiss international law expert Lucius Caflisch to represent it at the international court of arbitration in the Kishenganga project dispute with Pakistan. Pakistan has already named Bruno Simma, also of the International Court of Justice, and Jan Paulsson, Norwegian head of an international law firm to represent her.
Chased away: Family members of Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, the 17-year-old youth who was killed after a tear gas hit him on the head, chased away Mehbooba Mufti when she visited their Saidakadal residence to “express condolence” with the bereaved family.
ARREST: JKLF chief Yasin Malik, senior lawyer Zaffar Shah, chairperson APDP Parveena Ahangar, Kashmiri Pandit leader Kumar Ji Wanchoo, Sikh leader Amarjeet Singh, and Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees chairman Moulana Showkat Shah courted arrest along with JKLF activists as part of a weeklong ‘jail baro’ agitation launched by the group to protest human rights violations in the state . They were taken to Kothi Bagh police station Kothibagh and later shifted Central Jail Srinagar.
COMPLAINED: A student of Burn Hall School in Srinagar lodged a complaint against school authorities for cutting his hair as punishment for coming late to school. The students in higher classes reportedly boycotted the classes.
