Police used tear smoke shells during nocturnal raids in Nowshera, area of the city and arrested at least fifteen people including three brothers. The area is observing complete shutdown against what the locals call “the highhandedness” of police. They demand immediate release of the arrested people.
The people living in Khwaja Pora,Mukdam Pora and Kagazgari Mohalla, in Nowshera, area of the Srinagar city had to spent full night without sleeping.
“Police cordoned off the area at about 12 am, during the night and started raids in different houses,” said Mussadiq, a local adding “It resulted in panic and chaos among the people.”
The locals said that police arrested more than fifteen people during the nocturnal raids.
Police arrested three brothers from a single house. They have been identified by locals as Jan Mohammad Khan, Ashiq Hussain Khan and Raja Khan Sons of late Assadullah Khan.
The arrested include a 55 years old well known as Guga, son of Mohammad Amin Rather.
“The inmates resisted and police used a tear smoke shell in the house of Guga to silent them,” Irshad Ahmad, another local said.
Locals allege that police ransacked the house holds during the raids. They also allege that some days back police called a tailor, Bashir Ahmad Mir to police station and detained him “for nothing.”
When contacted the Station House Officer (SHO), Soura, Mudassir Abbas confirmed the nocturnal raids in Nowshera area but said that they arrested only five people.
“The five people whom we arrested are involved in stone pelting and we have strong evidences against them,” SHO said adding “the protests in Nowshera are still going on and the people demand the release of stone pelters.”
Pertinently, Nowshehra witnessed strong protests against Gool, killing. Sources said that police have framed a list of dozens of people who they allege were involved in the said protests. Sources added that police are going to arrest all the people in the list.
