SRINAGAR: Northern Railway on Friday operated a special train between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to facilitate the movement of passengers stranded by the continued closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).
The emergency service was introduced after heavy rainfall triggered landslides and shooting stones at several vulnerable locations along the highway, disrupting road connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region.
Railway officials said the special train evacuated more than 600 passengers affected by the suspension of vehicular traffic on the national highway.
According to the officials, the train was operated to provide safe transportation for stranded travellers and ease the inconvenience caused by the prolonged closure of the highway.
The special rail service offered relief to passengers awaiting an opportunity to leave the Valley while restoration and debris-clearance operations continued at multiple affected stretches of NH-44.
Authorities have advised travellers to check the latest traffic and railway advisories before commencing their journey, as prevailing weather conditions continue to affect transport services across the region.
