The 12th National Statistics Day was celebrated in the University of Kashmir on Saturday. The programme was organized by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Field Operations Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation, Regional Office Srinagar in collaboration with Department of Statistics, University of Kashmir.
The spokesman said that June 29 is celebrated as National Statistics Day in order to create awareness among establishments and the people, especially the younger generation about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. It is the birthday of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a statistician who founded the Indian Statistical Institute and made a significant contribution to the development of the statistical system.
Every year the theme of Statistics Day is decided on focused attention. The theme for the 12th Statistics Day is “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”.
Scholars, students and officers of NSSO also presented papers on the theme of Quality Assurance in Official Statistics on the occasion. The activities of NSSO and cultural programme on data collection prepared by a student of Department of Statistics were also shown during the programme.
