SRINAGAR: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will re-conduct the UGC-NET June 2026 examination for English, Commerce and Sociology after an expert committee found multiple factual, typographical, translation and other errors in the question papers.
The UGC-NET June 2026 examination was conducted from June 22 to 30 across 87 subjects for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes.
According to a public notice issued by the NTA on Saturday, the agency had received several complaints regarding errors in the question papers of the three subjects. A committee constituted to examine the complaints found multiple issues, including misspelt names of prominent scholars, garbled book titles, errors in question wording, grammatical mistakes, gender and number agreement errors, punctuation mistakes, non-standard coined terms for established concepts and repetition of several questions that had appeared in earlier examinations.
The committee recommended re-conducting the three papers in the interest of ensuring a fair and error-free examination.
The NTA said the defects in the papers were of such an extent that they could not be addressed merely by dropping questions after the challenge process.
The re-examinations will be held on September 9 and 10. The English paper will be conducted on September 9 from 9 am to noon, while the Commerce paper will be held the same day from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Sociology paper will be conducted on September 10 from 9 am to noon.
The agency said further details regarding examination cities, centres and admit cards would be notified separately on its official website. No additional examination fee will be charged from candidates appearing for the re-conducted examinations.
The NTA said results for the remaining 84 subjects, for which the answer key challenge process was issued earlier, would be declared as per schedule. Allocation of JRF seats and issuance of e-certificates for eligibility for Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes in these subjects would not be delayed because of the re-conduct of the three papers.
It further said the number of candidates to be declared eligible for Assistant Professor would be equal to six per cent of the candidates who appeared in the June 2026 examination or the re-test, whichever is higher.
For the three affected subjects, the subject-wise allocation for JRF, eligibility for Assistant Professor and eligibility for admission to PhD programmes will be carried out as prescribed in the Information Bulletin. The NTA said the numbers already allocated for each subject would not be reduced after the re-test.
The agency advised candidates to rely only on its official websites and official communications for further updates.
