SRINAGAR: Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, announced on Thursday that the Council of Ministers has formally proposed reinstating December 5 as a public holiday to honour the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s anniversary. The proposal has been submitted to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for approval.

The holiday, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was controversially discontinued in recent years by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration. Speaking to reporters at Sheikh Abdullah’s mausoleum in Hazratbal, Wani expressed optimism about the restoration of the holiday, hoping it would be reinstated by next year. “The proposal has been forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, and we are confident that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again have the opportunity to observe this important day,” he said.
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, founder of the National Conference, is celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. Known as the “Lion of Kashmir,” he fought against autocratic rule and worked to secure democratic freedoms and rights for the region’s people. Wani paid tribute to the Sheikh’s enduring legacy, highlighting his transformative contributions to the region’s history and identity. (With KINS Inputs)
