SRINAGAR: Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday claimed that she has been placed under house arrest along with other party leaders on the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.  People’s Democratic Party had sought permission to hold a seminar but the administration denied the permission.

PDP Chief in a Tweet informed, “I’ve been put under house arrest along with other senior PDP leaders today. This comes after a midnight crackdown where scores of my party men are illegally detained in police stations. GOIs false claims about normalcy to the SC stand exposed by theirs actions driven by paranoia.”

Mehbooba Mufti earlier in a Tweet said that the Srinagar administration launched a massive crackdown on the PDP leaders on the intervening night of Friday.

“Why is @JmuKmrPolice detaining PDP leaders on the eve of 5th August? Arif Laigroo has been taken by the police in this video. BJP is given a free run to carry out the tamasha of celebrating the illegal abrogation of Article 370 in Srinagar. All this is being done to hoodwink the public opinion in the country. Just goes on to expose the facade of normalcy – a fake  narrative to justify their illegal actions,” PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti said.

Many PDP youth leaders were also detained by police during the night. “By now most of the PDP youth leaders have been rounded up. Guards have been told not to let me go out on August 5. Celebrating the scrapping of J&K state,” PDP leader Naeem Akhtar Tweeted.

For the event, the PDP had sought permission to hold a seminar or discussion with the general public on Saturday on the abrogation of Articles 370 and Article 35A, party spokesperson Mohit Bhan said.

He said while the PDP was denied the permission, a request by BJP to hold an event at Jawahar Nagar Park and later a rally from Nehru Park to the SKICC to “celebrate” the abrogation of the two Articles has been allowed.

Meanwhile, the National Conference has alleged that the party headquarter in Srinagar has been sealed.

“True to form and in keeping with the clampdown on mainstream democratic activities organised by parties opposed to 5th Aug 2019, the JKNC office has been sealed by the police. No one is being allowed in or out of the office. These steps betray the nervousness of the administration & render hollow their claims regarding great improvements in the last 4 years,” it said in a Tweet.
