Over 9,600 Ride Gulmarg Gondola in Two Days After Pahalgam Attack

SRINAGAR: Despite the recent attack in Pahalgam, tourist activity in Kashmir remains steady, with thousands visiting the region’s destinations. From Sonamarg to Doodhpathri and the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg, visitor movement continues without major disruption.

Director of Tourism, Raja Yaqoob said the situation on the ground contrasts with reports suggesting a large-scale departure of tourists. “We currently have more than 1,300 tourists in Srinagar. Yesterday, over 5,000 people took the Gondola ride in Gulmarg, and today, 4,683 tickets were booked. This reflects ongoing trust in Kashmir’s tourism sector,” he said.

Tour operators also confirmed that bookings remain unaffected. “Cabs are still transporting visitors to major sites. Tourists are travelling to Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, and Gulmarg as usual. The idea of a mass tourist departure is exaggerated,” said a tourism stakeholder.

Locals have also been engaging with tourists to ensure they feel supported.

“I have never experienced this level of concern at a tourist destination,” said Prerna Rajput, a visitor from Pune currently in Sonamarg. “Locals regularly ask if we are well and if we need any help.”

Rahul Sharma, who remained in Gulmarg after the attack, shared a similar view. “The incident in Pahalgam was concerning, but the response from the local people reassured us. We did not feel unsafe.”

Other tourists shared similar experiences, mentioning that shopkeepers, hotel staff, and guides had made additional efforts to assist them. Karan Mehta, visiting Srinagar, said, “We received calls from hotel staff to check on our well-being. That speaks to the care shown here.”

Officials from the tourism department believe the response from locals has helped maintain confidence among visitors. “Tourists are not only safe here; they are being supported. That has been observed widely,” said an officer from the department.

With spring underway and the Valley’s landscape in seasonal transition, many tourists continue their visits. While the incident in Pahalgam remains present in public memory, tourism in the region continues steadily.

This surge in tourist activity comes despite heightened security alerts and a sense of unease following the Pahalgam incident. Gulmarg, however, stood firm as a symbol of hope and resilience in Kashmir’s tourism landscape.

In response to the tragedy, the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) announced full refunds for all unused Gondola tickets dated April 22 and 23. “As decided by the management, all no show/unconsumed Gulmarg Gondola tickets for Phase I and II shall be refunded in full,” the JKCCC confirmed via a post on its official X handle.
