PDP Slams ECI Over Delay in Jammu Kashmir By-Election Announcement

SRINAGAR: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed serious concern over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) delay in announcing by-elections for vacant assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, while similar electoral exercises have already been scheduled in other Indian states.

Chief Spokesperson of the PDP, Mehboob Beg, criticised the Election Commission for what he termed “inaction and silence” on filling key legislative vacancies in the Union Territory. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir have been patiently awaiting the restoration of their democratic rights,” Beg said. “The ECI has announced by-polls for states such as Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Punjab. Why is Jammu and Kashmir being sidelined?”

The ECI recently unveiled polling schedules for several vacant seats in different states, with voting due to take place in June 2025. However, the poll body has not made any similar announcement for Jammu and Kashmir, where several assembly seats remain unfilled due to resignations and other developments. The PDP has interpreted this omission as a signal that the democratic aspirations of J&K’s citizens are being neglected.

Beg remarked that the delay was deepening the existing political vacuum and could further alienate the public. “Jammu and Kashmir has already endured a prolonged period without a fully functional elected government. The delay in holding by-elections for vacant seats only erodes public trust in institutions,” he said, urging the ECI to act swiftly.

The spokesperson also demanded transparency from the Election Commission regarding the delay. “If there are logistical or security concerns, they must be communicated openly. Silence only breeds speculation and disillusionment. People have the right to know why they are being denied timely representation,” Beg added.

The PDP reiterated its demand for the full restoration of democratic processes in the region. It has called for immediate steps to ensure the conduct of both by-elections and general assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. The party maintains that electoral participation is a cornerstone of democratic governance and must not be postponed indefinitely.

Beg concluded by affirming the PDP’s commitment to upholding the constitutional and democratic rights of the people of J&K. “The right to vote and be represented is non-negotiable. The people deserve to be heard and must not be kept in political limbo any longer.”

The PDP has said it will continue to raise the issue with constitutional bodies and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure the timely revival of democratic governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
