Dr Jalla lud din
Thursday, when Kashmir was spontaneously shut against the civilian killings by Border Security Forces in Gool-Ramban in Jammu region, Valley’s known Cardiologist and former director of SKIMS Soura, Sheikh Jalla lud Din was attacked by unknown gunmen, injuring him and killing his two Personal Security Officers (PSO’s) on spot near his residence at Namblabal, Pampore.
Dr Jalla lud din, 64, is a protected person. His wife is the daughter of the former Congress leader and Minister, Late Ghulam Muhammad Mir Rajpuri.
In the attack while his two PSOs lost their life, Dr Jalla lud din was visually impaired. He was shifted to SKIMS which he once headed, for treatment. He has lost vision in both the eyes.
The doctors at SKIMS who attended him said he is out of danger but they could not save his eyes. The cardiologist was hit in his left eye and abdomen.
As the news spread leaders across the ideological divide condemned the attack on the noted cardiologist. Senior resistance leader Syed Ali Geelani, while strongly condemning the attack termed it as “inhumane and unacceptable”.
“It’s personally very painful for me,” Geelani while reacting on the attack said. “It is a tragic incident. He has been rendering invaluable services to people of Kashmir while he personally looked after my health.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed the attack an act of cowardice and said that the terror mongers who attack such respectable persons have no concern for precious human lives. “It is an act of cowardice,” he said. “Such attempts by terror mongers on the respectable persons who are the asset to the society are unfortunate and depict the mind set of these elements having no concern for precious human lives,” he added.
For PDP president, the broad day light attack reflects the total breakdown of law and order machinery in the State.
“Such dastardly and unfortunate incidents only result in tragedies,” Mehbooba Mufti while expressing her heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family said, adding, “the broad day attack on Dr Jalla lud din reflects the total breakdown of law and order machinery in the State, where human lives have lost the meaning now.”
Dr Jalla lud din, MD, DM in cardiology is vice president of National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. The board, parallel to Medical Council of India, awards specialized degrees in various medicinal fields. Serving in SKIMS, he headed Cardiology department for over one and a half decade before taking over its reins where he retired after almost two and a half years.
Close associate and personal doctor of late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and then late Begum Abdullah, Dr Jalla lud din is known for the works he under took for patients care at SKIMS. As Kashmir turmoil had its effect on SKIMS as well, Dr Jalla lud din, hard-master-task as his colleagues call him, took many important steps to overcome the problems.
During his tenure as Director SKIMS, many important equipment like the CT scan, the MRI machines were purchased. The emergency medical fair price shop in SKIMS has also been started by him.
The territiary hospital he once headed is now taking care of his health!
