SRINAGAR: At least three drug trafficking networks have been busted in north Kashmir on Tuesday with police stating that the narcotics worth Rs 43 crores have been seized and eight persons have been arrested in this regard.
“Drug addiction has become a worldwide problem and unfortunately, Kashmir is no exception due to the prolonged turmoil and militancy,” a police spokesman said in a statement.
As per the reports of the parliamentary standing committee on social justice and empowerment, approximately 1.35 million drug users are estimated to be in the UT of JK, the statement said, adding that illegal drugs and narcotics remain a pressing issue with far-reaching consequences that affect individuals, families and community on the larger extent.
In the ongoing efforts against drug abuse, Police said that in three separate incidents across the north Kashmir recovered around six kgs of Heroine and Brown Sugar having net worth of Rs 43 crores and detained eight persons in various coordinated efforts in district Baramulla, Kupwara and PD Handwara.
Three FIRs under relevant sections of NDPS act were registered in the concerned Police Stations of Range NKR Baramulla, police said.
In PS Baramulla, a case under FIR number 243/2024 under section 8/21,29 NDPS act stands registered in which 2.695 kgs of heroine( like substance) recovered and three persons arrested.
At PS Karnah, a case under FIR number 58/2024 under section 8/21, 29 NDPS Act stands registered in which 2.884 kgs of heroine (like substance) recovered and four persons stands arrested while in PS Handwara, a case under FIR number 193/2024 under section 8/21 NDPS act stands registered in which 465 gms of Brown Sugar (like substance) was recovered and one person has been arrested.
The arrested persons include Nazim Din Tass, son of Alamdin Tass of Zamboor Pattan Uri, Waqar Ahmad Khawaja, son of Abdul Rouf Khawaja of Tangdhar Kupwara, Manzoor Ahmad of Handwara, Sajad Ahmad Gorsi, son of Wali ur Rehman of Amrohi, Mohd Ismail Gorsi, son of Faqeer Mohd of Amrohi, Majid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohd Yousuf of Tangdar Bakhayan, Nisar Ahmad Badan, son of Mohd Suliaman of Amrohi Karnah and Javid Ahmad Sofi, son of Ab Razaq Sofi of Khunbal Handwara.
Meanwhile, the statement reads that Jammu and Kashmir Police remains resolute in its commitment to eradicate the drug related crimes from the fiber of Society by dismantling illicit narcotics networks supported by militancy—(KNO)
