SRINAGAR: Police in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir registered 24 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in a single day as part of an intensified crackdown against narcotics, officials said.
An official said that the cases were registered against alleged narcotic cultivators and peddlers during multiple operations carried out across the district. Large consignments of contraband were seized and several persons were arrested.
Separately, police destroyed illegal poppy cultivation spread over 10 marlas of land and registered five FIRs in different parts of the district on Thursday.
At Dooru, police, in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and officials from the Agriculture Department, destroyed poppy cultivation and registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, officials said.
In Larnoo, police detected illegal poppy cultivation and registered an FIR after destroying the crop on the spot, they said.
Police Station Pahalgam registered three separate cases in connection with illegal poppy cultivation in different areas under its jurisdiction. The action was carried out in coordination with the Revenue and Agriculture departments, officials added.
Police said the drive against narcotics will continue with increased intensity and appealed to the public to share information regarding illegal cultivation or trafficking, assuring confidentiality of informers.(KNS)
