SRINAGAR: Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday called for the rights of political prisoners to be upheld universally, saying their treatment should not depend on geography, governments or political affiliations.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said prisoners must be treated with dignity and humanity and should have access to proper medical care, family members, legal counsel and due process.
His remarks came amid concerns in Pakistan over the medical treatment of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.
Mirwaiz also stressed the need for judicial orders to be respected and the rule of law upheld, maintaining that political differences could not justify the denial of fundamental rights to prisoners.
“Political differences can never justify denying a prisoner his or her fundamental rights,” he said.
He added that the rights of political prisoners were universal and extended beyond political boundaries and affiliations.
