SRINAGAR: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has suspended seven MBBS students and ordered their immediate eviction from the boys’ hostel following an inquiry into a reported ragging incident on the intervening night of September 28 and 29, 2026.
The disciplinary action, ordered by the Principal of GMC Anantnag, applies to both hostel accommodation and academic activities and will remain in force until further orders.
According to Order No. 51-GMCA(PS) of 2026, dated October 3, the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee took cognisance of the incident and conducted a detailed inquiry into the allegations. The committee’s findings established the involvement of seven students from the MBBS Batch 2025, according to the order.
The students have been suspended from the Boys Hostel, GMC Anantnag, and evicted from their accommodation with immediate effect. The college said the measure was taken to ensure a safe and secure environment for other hostel residents.
The suspension also bars the students from all academic activities with immediate effect, including theory and practical classes, clinical postings and examinations. The order does not specify an end date and states that the suspension will continue until further orders.
The college has directed the parents or guardians of the students to accompany them and appear before the Anti-Ragging Committee at GMC Anantnag on October 12, 2026, at 2.30 pm for further proceedings.
The order warns that failure to comply with the directions may result in additional disciplinary action under the applicable National Medical Commission (NMC) Anti-Ragging Regulations and institutional statutes.
The Anti-Ragging Committee examined the allegations and conducted the inquiry without prejudice to any party before submitting its findings and recommendations to the Principal, the order states.
The Chief Warden and Warden of the Boys Hostel have been directed to implement the eviction orders. The concerned students have also been instructed to comply with the directions and appear before the committee with their parents or guardians at the specified date and time.
The action at GMC Anantnag comes days after SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina, took disciplinary action against five MBBS students and interns following their reported involvement in a ragging incident. On October 2, the institution suspended the five for one week and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each.
Ragging is prohibited in Jammu and Kashmir under the Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition of Ragging Act, 2011, as well as under applicable institutional guidelines and regulations issued by bodies including the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Medical Commission.
