SRINAGAR: Doctors at a private hospital in Shopian have successfully treated a young male patient with an unusual congenital anomaly—duplication of the gallbladder. This rare condition, where two distinct gallbladders form within the body, was further complicated by a 15-millimetre solitary stone located in one of the gallbladders. Each gallbladder was connected by a separate cystic duct, adding complexity to the case.
Initially, the patient’s ultrasound suggested a septate gallbladder. However, during the surgical procedure, the medical team discovered two fully formed gallbladders. What was initially thought to be an adherent section of the duodenum was carefully separated to reveal the second gallbladder, confirming the presence of the duplicate organ.
The complex laparoscopic surgery was led by Dr Ayoub, with anaesthesia overseen by Dr Irfan Bashir. Both gallbladders were successfully removed, and the patient made a smooth recovery. He has since been discharged in stable condition.
