Addressing a gathering, Dr Farooq said the special constitutional status reflected Jammu and Kashmir’s “distinct and unique constitutional relationship” with the Union and remained central to the party’s political vision.

He said that despite the unilateral alteration of the constitutional provisions relating to J&K, the National Conference would not retreat from its position and would continue its political and constitutional struggle.

“The issue remains at the top of the party’s agenda,” he said, adding that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had the right to raise their voice for restoration of their constitutional rights.

Dr Farooq said the party had repeatedly reiterated its position through meetings, rallies and conventions and would stand by the commitments made to the people.

He also said Jammu and Kashmir was facing several issues and difficulties, stressing the need for an elected government with a strong mandate and adequate powers to address public concerns, ensure development and strengthen governance.

The NC president called for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that the aspirations and rights of the people were protected.

He also stressed greater focus on education, social welfare and youth empowerment, saying that the younger generation had an important role in the future of the region.

Meanwhile, Dr Farooq Abdullah visited the residence of noted trader Haji Muhammad Sidiq Beigh at Barzulla to condole the demise of his wife. He offered Fatiha for the departed soul and prayed for her eternal peace and a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous.

He also prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved family to bear the loss.

Political Advisor to Dr Farooq Abdullah, MLA Mushtaq Guroo, Provincial Secretary Syed Tawqeer and Publicity Secretary Mir G.M. Saqi were also present on the occasion.

Dr Farooq also appealed to party workers and the public to remain united and work towards peace, social harmony and development, saying the party’s political struggle was a collective responsibility of its leadership, workers and the people.
