Authorities on Friday imposed restrictions in areas of Srinagar to prevent Ashura procession.

District administration has imposed restrictions in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Police Stations Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Kothibagh, and Maharaj Gunj areas of  Srinagar to prevent the Ashura procession.

Authorities said the restrictions are preventive in nature and have been imposed to maintain law and order in the city.

A large number of CRPF and policemen have been deployed around sensitive parts of the city, witnesses said. At many places, government forces have laid razor wire to restrict the movement of people.

Authorities have not allowed any 8th and 10th Muharram processions in Srinagar since 1989.
