SRINAGAR: Three people were killed and scores injured after Russian missiles and drones struck 10 regions of Ukraine, hitting residential buildings as well as civilian and critical infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday, Al Jazeera reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a post on social media said Russia had launched an attack involving more than 200 aerial targets, while Ukrainian air defences intercepted a large number of the incoming weapons. He said Russian drones remained active over parts of the country.
Two people were killed in Zaporizhzhia region after a Shahed drone struck residential buildings, according to Zelenskyy. Six people were injured in the attack, while further casualties were reported after another strike on an enterprise in the region.
In Kryvyi Rih, a Russian missile struck a critical infrastructure facility, killing one person and injuring three, Zelenskyy said.
Two people were also injured in the Kyiv region during the overnight attacks, according to regional authorities.
In Odesa, emergency workers continued operations at a high-rise residential building damaged in a Russian missile strike. Zelenskyy said 37 people had been injured and that rescuers were searching for two people reported missing.
A Russian drone attack on a hotel in Chornomorsk, in Odesa region, on Saturday morning left 11 people injured, Ukrainian authorities said. Six of those hurt were people with limited mobility.
The strikes also caused damage to infrastructure in other parts of the country. Zelenskyy said petrol stations in the Zhytomyr and Rivne regions were targeted, while a locomotive depot in Odesa region was also hit.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian forces had destroyed or intercepted more than 200 aerial targets since the beginning of the day, although some missiles and drones managed to reach their targets.
The latest barrage came amid a sustained escalation in long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine. Reuters has reported that Russian forces have increasingly targeted logistics, energy and economic infrastructure across Ukraine, while Kyiv has also intensified drone attacks against Russian military and economic facilities.
Al Jazeera, citing Ukrainian officials as well as AFP and Reuters, has also reported a series of deadly Russian attacks across Ukraine in recent days, including strikes on Pavlohrad, Dnipro, Mykolaiv and Sumy.
Russia has maintained that its forces target military and logistical sites, while Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly accused Moscow of striking civilian and economic infrastructure.
The casualty figures and details of damage in the latest attacks were provided by Ukrainian authorities, and the extent of the destruction was still being assessed.
