Goons from land mafia attacked Fatima Begum mother of Baba Umar, a Kashmiri freelance journalist with Al Jazeera when his family was getting their land fenced at Hyderpora locality Sunday afternoon.

Fatima, who owns the land, was hit with a shovel, steel rods and axe on her head and was rushed to Budgam hospital in a critical condition. Attackers included a woman also.

The family sources said the land mafia had already been trying to grab the land and the family had reported it to the police. “Yesterday also when the incident happened, her son Baba Umar had gone to police post Humhama fearing attack by the land mafia,” they said. “But when he was in the Thana, her mother was attacked by goons.”

The family identified the accused as Shoki, wife of Ghulam Rasool Dar alias Lassa Shikari and others associated with the group. Fatima’s family said the accused enjoy patronage of a woman politician, who lost the 2014 Assembly elections.

“They manage to run the land mafia at her behest,” the family said.

Shokhi was supposed to come to Humhama police station with Nissar Ahmad – a cop belt no 732 (SGCT). But she escaped from the car along with her partners and went to the site to commit the murder.

When a police party went to arrest the assaulters, they instead razed the fence to ground with a bulldozer.

Meanwhile, the condition of Fatima Begum remains critical after she suffered 37 stitches on her head.

Police has filed a case. When contacted SSP Budgam Fayaz Ahmed Lone said the matter has come to his notice. “We are looking into it,” the SSP said.

Various journalist groups of Kashmir have expressed solidarity and appealed the DGP K Rajendra Kumar and the divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Hassan Samoon to personally look into the matter.
