SRINAGAR: Security forces on Saturday stepped up checking and surveillance across several parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar, Pulwama and Kulgam, following the recent killing of a police head constable in Anantnag and in response to specific intelligence inputs.
In Srinagar, police conducted an extensive checking drive at Lal Chowk, M.A. Road and Residency Road, where buses, Sumo vehicles and other public transport were stopped and inspected. Taxi stands and passenger vehicles also came under heightened scrutiny as part of measures aimed at preventing any untoward incident and ensuring public safety.
Officials said the intensified checking formed part of preventive security arrangements at vulnerable locations and was carried out without causing major disruption to traffic.
In south Kashmir, Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) intensified naka checking in Pulwama’s main market, while Kulgam Police established multiple checkpoints across the district, including along the National Highway, with vehicles undergoing thorough inspection.
The heightened security measures follow the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi on July 22. Qureshi, who was deployed on security duty for the ongoing Shri Amarnathji Yatra, was shot dead by a suspected militant at point-blank range near Lal Chowk in Anantnag.
Officials said security has been significantly strengthened across Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the attack, with enhanced vigilance, increased vehicle checking and intensified surveillance at sensitive locations.
Police appealed to the public to cooperate during the checking drives, stating that the measures are intended to safeguard citizens and maintain law and order amid the prevailing security situation.
