Terming the murderous assault on Sarbjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail Lahore as unfortunate, the separatist leadership Thursday welcomed Government of Pakistan’s decision to hand over the body of the deceased to his family for performing last rites.
Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani while terming the death of Sarabjit as unfortunate said that Pakistan government should probe why there was a security lapse that led to assault on Sarabjit. He said that authorities should ensure the safety of all detainees in prison.
“By taking the initiative with respect to Sarabjit, Pakistan has acted most humanely and achieved a moral victory over the colonial approach of India,” Geelani said in a statement to KNS.
Taking a dig at Indian attitude, Geelani said, “Tall claims of India being a great democracy in world proved a hoax. Pakistan despite difficulties and impediments has decided in accordance with principals of humanism.”
“We may differ when a person is alive but as soon he is declared dead, no law allows to rear hate and hostility,” Geelani added.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while welcoming the humane gesture from Pakistan said that the murderous assault on Sarabjit should be thoroughly investigated.
“The decision of Pakistan to return the body of Sarabjit is a welcome step. The mortal remains of Afzal Guru still remain in Tihar jail and government of India is not serious about returning his mortal remains to his family members,” Mirwaiz said in a statement.
Other separatist leaders also appreciated the move of Pakistan and said it is unlike the “colonial policy of India which still does not give the mortal remains of Afzal Guru to his family members.”
