The Kashmir valley witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall compelling authorities to close Srinagar-Jammu highway on Wednesday due to landslides.

It was still snowing at different places on the highway connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, official sources said.

The highway was closed for traffic after more than one feet of fresh snowfall was recorded at Jawahar tunnel, they said, adding that Qazigund, Banihal and other places also received fresh snowfall since early this morning.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO),  responsible for the maintainance of the highway has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway.

However, continuous snowfall was hampering the snow clearance operation on the road which has also become slippery.
Heavy overnight rains has also triggered landslides and shooting stones in Ramban area.

The Met department has already issued a forecast for heavy snowfall in Pirpanchal range, including, the highway for two days.

Meanwhile, the Mughal road besides roads connecting far-flung villages with their respective district and tehsil headquarters in south Kashmir districts of Kulgam and Shopian remained closed due to heavy snowfall.
