 SRINAGAR

A complete shutdown is being observed in the south town of Shopian on Thursday to commemorate the fourth anniversary of two young women, Aasia and Neelofar. The duo was allegedly rapid and murdered after kidnapping on May 29,2009.

All shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic was off the roads. The shutdown call was given by Hurriyat(G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani.

Teenage Aasiya (17) and her sister-in-law, Neelofar Jan (22), went missing on May 29 in 2009 and their bodies were recovered from banks of Rambiara Nallah on May 30,2009.

The tragedy shocked the entire Kashmir Valley, which led to the massive protests. Shopian town observed a complete shutdown for 47 days against the failure of the authorities to identify the culprits.

Even though the case was investigated first by a Commission and then by CBI, but it could not satisfy the victim family and the Shopian Majlis-e-Mashawrat, a citizens body heading what it calls “a fight for seeking justice”.
